MY WORK IDENTITY

What's behind my Identity as a Designer.

DESIGNER

As a young man I was fascinated by how every day objects were designed. In a quest to understand the "how", I would dismantle the design to understand the different pieces, and how they work together. The next question in my mind was "why?".

Driven by that curiosity I would constantly seek answers to why, one design was better than the other. I believe this was the fundamental reason why I chose to be a Designer. The most exciting part of being a designer is the opportunity to learn new things and having the courage to step into the unknown.

I have had the opportunity to design for large brands as a Member of a Team and Individual Contributor. I worked alongside entrepreneurs, brand managers, product owners, design and marketing agencies. I have led a team of designers structured around a line of business during my days at the agency.

I have won several accolades during my career and have made great and lasting relationships.

STRATEGIST

I believe a strong Business Strategy with a focus on end-user benefit will create a conducive environment for Good Design Solutions.

As a designer I have experimented with design methods and tools that allow teams and organizations understand the needs, explore possibilities and help make decisions before investing in time and resources. Methods I practice are a hybrid of Design Thinking, Design Sprints and Strategy Sessions. I carefully craft a session with a good understanding of the participants and the challenges ahead. I blend the right mix of tools and techniques to extract the best possible outcome from the participants. Other outcomes I work towards are organizational alignment, common understanding and a well defined set of requirements and prototypes. I follow up on testing the concepts with different user groups, iterate and help prioritize action items.

Strategy backed by research and understanding is a good starting point for creating innovative design solutions that meet business and end-user goals.

LEADER

I lead by example, early on in my career I was fortunate to work with Leaders who paved the way to strive for excellence. I learnt a lot in my failures and successes, and have emerged optimistic in my approach. I believe Leadership quality is not a designation but a position of great responsibility and trust that we grow into. I have continued to encourage and inspire my work friends, constantly challenging and pushing the boundaries for a better outcome. I set my designers up for success by removing barriers and providing a flexible and fun work environment.

With a focus on value creation I continually advice my team on learning opportunities and career paths.

As a leader I never miss an opportunity to appreciate, learn and share my stories and encourage wild ideas. Am also passionate about teaching design methods and tools. Am always on the look out for great talent to join my team.

As I always remind myself "Have courage and step into the unknown... foot steps will appear in front of you".
